Evan Chin

Evan Chin ’28, a Computer Science major with a specification in security and a minor in Responsible Artificial Intelligence, chose Â鶹ŮÀÉ for its Jesuit values of competence, conscience, and compassion. “Through SCU’s teachings, I’ve learned how ethics and empathy intersect with technology,” he explains. “In cybersecurity, conscience means recognizing the responsibility that comes with handling sensitive information, while compassion reminds us to approach every situation with care.”

Originally from the Chicago, Illinois area, Evan is proud to be the first in his family to attend Santa Clara. “It’s an honor to start what I hope will become a family legacy here,” he says. His favorite class so far, CSCI 61, has inspired him to think critically and creatively. “The problems in that course felt like puzzles with many possible solutions,” he recalls. “It taught me to approach challenges from different angles and find the most effective path forward.”

Evan’s decision to study computer science, complemented by a focus on responsible AI, stems from his belief that technology should serve humanity. “AI is advancing so quickly across so many fields,” he notes. “By studying computer science and AI, I hope to help create a safer and more secure world for everyone.” This goal reflects the Jesuit commitment to social responsibility—a principle Evan strives to embody both in and beyond the classroom.

Beyond his studies, Evan is actively involved in BroncoSec, SCU’s cybersecurity club, where he serves as Outreach Manager. “I enjoy taking the initiative to learn beyond the classroom and helping other students engage with cybersecurity professionals,” he says. “Hearing their experiences helps me see how the work we do impacts everyday lives.” His leadership role has deepened his passion for cybersecurity and his understanding of how collaboration and shared learning can strengthen digital safety.

Receiving the Fr. Coz Endowed Scholarship has been life-changing for Evan and his family. “Due to a major emergency that occurred within my family, I thought I would be unable to attend university,” he explains. “The Fr. Coz Scholarship made my education possible. It has reduced my stress and allowed me to focus fully on my studies.”

To the donors who support the Fr. Coz Scholarship, Evan offers heartfelt thanks. “You are truly making a difference in students’ lives,” he says. “Your generosity has transformed my experience at Santa Clara and made it possible for me to pursue my education and future goals.”
